The Ultimate Guide to Sunless Spray Tanning

This week’s weather has had us in a summer vibes state of mind. Can you believe Memorial Day Weekend is next month? On that note, we’re sharing a few of our all-time favorite sunless spray tanning tips from Dee McLaughlin, owner of Walkin’ On Sunshine.

Prior to your sunless spray tan, be sure to take care of the following, which can affect the results of your sunless tan.

EXFOLIATING. Start by doing full body exfoliations to remove that sometimes “scaly” winter dead skin, then follow with moisturizer.

SHAVING/WAXING. This should always be done prior to getting your spray tan. Tanning solution will adhere to hair and reduce the effectiveness of the spray tan, potentially resulting in an un-even spray.

MANI/PEDIS. If possible, try to do this before your special event tan as well. Some of the products used during these beauty treatments are exfoliants. So, if you must do this after your tan, make sure to tell your technician not to use anything that could exfoliate your skin.

The tanning process takes about 25 minutes, which includes about 15 minutes for the spray and then about 10 minutes of drying time. But you need to wait at least 6 hours to give the DHA time to fully activate. If you wear tight fitting clothing, engage in vigorous physical activity, swim, or shower before your sunless tan fully develops, you run the risk of lines and streaking.

For athletes and fitness fanatics, it is always best to let your spray tan artist know ahead of time if you have any workouts, games, practices, or rehearsals so we can pick the best day and time for your session. The same applies for brides and their bridal party, and prom-goers.

For those looking for a moisturizer to prolong your tan, Walkin’ On Sunshine loves Amir Argan Oil and Mina Organics Hemp Moisturizer, and so does their clients. Both products are also available at Walkin' On Sunshine. Word of caution: avoid anything oil-based around your eyes, especially if you're wearing lash extensions.

You should be wearing sunscreen year round, not just during the spring. But if you're planning on getting spray tanned frequently, be sure to invest in some oil-free sunblock because it will keep your sunless tan looking sweet while on sunny excursions and trips to the BEACH!

Also if possible protect your skin further by layering up with protective clothing and stay in the shade.

Ideally, you’ll avoid skin exposure, but hey, things happen. If you have light or dark tan/pinkish lines, a spray tan can absolutely blend them to the perfect all over bronze!

Body Skincare: Tips for Summer Fun in the Sun

Welcome Dee McLaughlin, owner of Walkin' On Sunshine, who is guest blogging this week on the La Belle Studio Blog! Dee is sharing her expertise on sunless tanning, body skincare, and product tips.

Hey, y’all! Happy almost Memorial Day Weekend! So, with this phrase comes the right to bare arms, legs and bathing suit SKIN!

Knowing that this winter has been rough on the body, let's go over a few things to help you get your skin prepped and ready for “Fun in the Summer Sun.”

1. DIY Ways to Exfoliate

So first, we need to get rid of that dry, flaky dead skin. Some may choose to go to a spa for a relaxing full body exfoliation treatment. However, if time doesn’t allow, or it’s not in your budget, no worries. A steamy shower or hot bath with a homemade exfoliant will totally do the trick.

Quick DIY Tip: To create your own exfoliant, use coconut oil or honey (a tablespoon) and sea salt (teaspoon). For sensitive skin, substitute oatmeal for sea salt and squeeze in some fresh lemon juice. Our clients have been using this mixture for years, and it works like a charm!

Now that we have a fresh canvas, it’s time to moisturize DAILY.

2. Apply moisturizer First, Then Sunblock

To maximize your moisturizer's effects, apply your moisturizer followed by a lotion-based sunblock. (Do this before you get dressed in the morning.) It will allow for the moisturizer to absorb into the skin. If you reverse the order, the sunblock will prevent absorption.

Make sure you are using SPF always, even in your daily travels or activities. You’d be surprised by the amount of sun exposure you get in a short amount of time.

Doing this will not only protect your skin, but your spray tan, too! Oh and peeps, remember that sunblock is not a one and done! You should reapply frequently as the rays these days are super strong. Plus, water activities will require reapplication, too.

And don't forget to reapply your moisturizer again at night, after you've washed off your sunblock!

3. Moisturizers That prolong Spray tans

For those looking for a moisturizer to prolong your tan, we love Amir Argan Oil,  and so do our clients. This product is also available at Walkin' On Sunshine.

I also always recommend coconut oil because it has a natural SPF of 4-5. It's not much SPF, but it adds additional coverage to normal sunblock. Also Mina Organics Hemp moisturizer is fabulous, too, and also available at Walkin' On Sunshine.

Another option are dry oil sprays which work well, too. If applying outdoors, be sure to spray away from the wind so it actually hits. And avoid anything oil-based around your eyes, especially if you're wearing lash extensions.

Now You're Summer Skin Ready!

And there you go, in just a few easy steps, your skin is refreshed, glowing, prepped and ready to go get that spray tan or hang out in the sun.

Here's to a great start to a wonderful summer full of fun, awesome glowing skin, and loads of cherished memories for all!
