Earlier this year, we lifted the veil of mystery on some common skincare myths. With so many myths out there, we’ve put together another round of Fact or Fiction: Skincare Myths Part 2.

True or False: Pores Can Open and Close

False: Your pores always remain the same size. Using a product like Fresh Faced Skin Care Pore Perfection Toner will refine pores, remove dead skin cells, and leave the skin smooth and clear.

But products like Fresh Faced won’t widen your pores, and neither will steaming your skin. And cold water doesn’t close your pores either.

True or False: Greasy Foods Cause Acne

False: Although clinical studies indicate that certain foods like dairy and carbs may trigger a breakout, they aren’t the cause of acne. Genetics determine your skin’s shedding cycle, which determines if you get acne.

Acne prone skin sheds more often, causing dead skin cells to build up in the pore and follicle. That build up plus oil creates a clog, resulting in inflammation and then a pimple. Multiple that by lots of pores and you’ve got acne. So, those delicious Thrasher’s French Fries you’ve been craving? Go ahead and indulge in a few.

True of False: Toothpaste Will Quickly Get Rid of Pimple

False: Got an important event coming up and suddenly have a pimple? You may have heard about using toothpaste as a home remedy to quickly get rid of the blemish. Don’t fall for it.

Although some toothpaste has hydrogen peroxide which is an antiseptic, it’s only a temporary fix. Plus you run the risk of irritating your skin further if you have a reaction to the toothpaste.

True of False: You Should See Instant Results With A Skincare Product

False: When a product claims to show immediate results overnight, don’t fall for the hype. Some products can take anywhere from a few weeks to up to three months with consistent use before you see significant results.

If you switch products after just a week, you’re never given them a chance to actually work to their full potential.

True of False: How You Wrinkle Is Genetic

False: Ever heard the saying, “Look at your mom and you’ll know how you’re going to age?”

Throw that old wives’ tale out the window.

Sure, genetics do play a role in skin aging. However, the lifestyle choices (e.g. smoking, sun exposure, stress) we make will play a larger role in the way our skin ages.

For example, studies have shown identical twins (who should age the same way), can be impacted by lifestyle and environmental factors, resulting in one twin’s skin aging faster than the other.

By making healthier lifestyle choices, practicing good skincare habits, and using the right skincare products for your targeted concerns, you can help slow down the signs of aging.

Facial Massage Techniques

Want to take your skincare routine to the next level? Incorporate facial massages that you do yourself!

At home facial massages can be done anytime you cleanse, or apply your skincare products (e.g. serum, moisturizer). By incorporating massages into your daily skincare routine, you’ll be improving circulation and temporarily minimizing the appearance of fine wrinkles.

Here are some techniques to try at home.

Basic Facial Technique

This is a great daily technique to do plus the only tools you need are your fingers.

Before beginning, cleanse your skin, then apply your preferred skincare product(s). Once your products have been applied, begin the facial technique.

  1. Nose: Sweep your fingers down the bridge of your nose, then sweep your fingers under your eyes and outward.

  2. Cheekbones: Move your fingers over your cheekbones and sweep outward, repeating the same motion under your cheekbones.

  3. Forehead: Use the same sweeping motion and work from the center of your forehead out, using upward motions from your eyebrows to your hairline. For this motion, use your thumbs to perform vertical strokes while keeping the rest of your fingers together for the horizontal strokes.

  4. Chin: Using both of your index fingers, sweep from the bottom of your lip to your jawline. Then move from the center of your chin outward to your ears. Next use two fingers on each hand, sweeping from the center of your chin outward and up to your ears. (For visual reference, one finger should go above the jawline with the other below the jaw.)

  5. Neck/Chest: First use light, quick strokes up the neck to the jawline to lift your skin. Then use small, sweeping movements in a circular motion from the center of your chest outward, helping to smooth wrinkles.

Tools Needed: Just your fingers.

Depuffing Massage

Suffer from allergies? Or perhaps over indulged in salty foods or a tasty alcoholic beverage? It’s not uncommon to wake up to a puffy face the next day. Yikes! These two facial massage techniques each focus on depuffing your skin. Choose whichever one you like, or alternate.

Ice Therapy Technique

If you’re a fan of sheet masks, give yours a boost by incorporating an ice therapy massage technique. Not only will it help your mask work better, but it will depuff your skin at the same time.

  1. Apply the sheet mask.

  2. Take two ice cubes and wrap them separately in a thin washcloth or gauze.

  3. Hold an ice cube in each hand, and run it across your forehead, under your eyes, over your cheeks, under your cheekbones, along the chin, and down your neck. Be sure to work from the nose out.

Tools Needed: Sheet Mask + Two Ice Cubes.

Jade Roller.png

Jade Roller Technique

A jade roller is a handheld massaging tool that looks like a small paint roller. Not only is it great for contouring (more on that in a sec), but it’s an excellent depuffer when stored in the fridge.

  1. Start in the middle of your face and roll upwards and outwards across your cheeks.

  2. Next, move the roller to your eyebrows and roll upwards across the forehead.

  3. Finally, move the roller below your lower lip and roll downward across your chin.

Contouring Massage

Meghan Markle is a fan of facial massages for good reason, they can temporarily contour, making your face appear more sculpted. One way to contour your face is by using the Gua Sha technique.

Gua sha is a process involving a tool that’s used to rub the skin in long strokes. The purpose is to enhance blood flow to the skin to boost blood circulation and natural drainage of the lymph nodes. Its shape enables it to scrape the skin intentionally to create transitory therapeutic petechiae (bruising). As a result, it helps contour and refine the face, releasing muscular tension and lifting the skin. Users of the product have even found it to help relieve jaw pain and alleviate headaches.

Begin by applying your serum, then moisturizer. Using the Gua Sha tool, you’ll scrape in an upward motion, at a 45 degree angle, using long scraping strokes going upwards and outwards.

  1. Chin: Start at the base of your chin and work upward.

  2. Lips: Across the center of your lips to the edge of your face.

  3. Nose/Cheekbone: Work from the outside of your nose, toward below your cheekbone to your ear.

  4. Brow Bone: Go along the contour of the brow bone from the center out to your temple.

  5. Brow/Hairline: Move upwards from your brow to your hairline, across your forehead.
