When you're in your 20s, it's easy to be lax with your skincare regime. You think that natural glow and supple skin will last forever. But environmental factors and genetics are lurking just around the bend, ready to suck the youth out of you.
While sadly there's no magic potion to completely eradicate the signs of aging, there is some preventative maintenance you can start now.
Always Use Sunscreen
While 90% of sun damage to your dermis (deepest layer of skin) occurs before the age of 19, there are ways to prevent the damage from showing on the surface of your skin (epidermis) too early in life. Remember, there is NO safe way to tan. Always apply SUNSCREEN before heading out the door. Believe it or not, the side of your face that faces the window when you drive typically shows more signs of aging. UV rays are everywhere! And don't forget your face. Use a face sunscreen, and pop on some sunglasses to keep the crow's feet away.
Choosing a Sun Protection Factor (SPF): What's the difference between SPF 15, 30, 45? By applying SPF 15, it allows you to stay out in the sun 15 times longer than you would burn if you weren't wearing sunscreen for protection. Always keep in mind though that everyone has a different timeframe of how long that would be (e.g. someone fair vs. someone with darker skin.) And it's vital to reapply. The lower the SPF, the more you need to reapply often.
Let's say you're out in the sun for 20 minutes. If your skin starts to get red, the damage is already done. So, by applying SPF 15 beforehand, you could stay out in the sun for 300 MINUTES with no reddening and no damage.
The higher the level of SPF, the more UVB protection. SPF 15 blocks 93% of UVB radiation while SPF 30 blocks 97%. Although SPF 30 is the average recommended, if you're fairer, you may need stronger.
Physical vs Chemical Sunscreens: Opt for the physical sunscreen (titanium dioxide and zinc), which repel UV rays. Chemical sunscreen absorbs and does nothing for UV protection, putting you at risk for anti-aging.

Maintain a Balanced Diet & Exercise
Your skin is a mirror of what you eat and drink. Those mega fries and margaritas from the night before will show up the next day in the form of dry, blotchy, and puffy skin. Yuck.
Flush fluid retention by drinking water, avoid fast food (except for the occasional El Diablo splurge), and keep an eye out for food allergies that can potentially wreck havoc on your skin.
Along with a healthy diet, incorporate a form of exercise (e.g. Pilates, Yoga, Jogging, CrossFit, etc.).
