Stress Breakouts: What You Need to Know

Shopping, traveling, cooking, entertaining... the holidays can be extremely busy. It's no wonder we get so stressed out. And if the stress isn't bad enough, sometimes it can cause stress-induced blemishes and acne breakouts. Ugh. Stress breakouts can happen at anytime, not just during the holidays.

Here's what you need to know to get your skin back on track.

Why Stress Breakouts Happen

When we get stressed out, our body goes into fight mode, redirecting blood flood and oxygen to more vital areas (e.g. heart, lungs, brain). It's not that different from when you're cold, and your extremities are affected first, because blood flow is reduced to vital organs. As your skin is deprived of blood and oxygen, it becomes dehydrated and more prone to clogged pores. Combine that with the excess oil produced by cortisol, a hormone your body produces when stressed, and no wonder you've got breakouts occurring.

Plus, if you already suffer from acne, you're even more prone to stress breakouts. (For all things acne, check out our post: Acne 101.

Preventative Maintenance

When you're stressed out, it's easy to let things fall to the wayside including diet and skincare. Here are a few things you shouldn't neglect:

1. Don't Let Your Diet Go Off the Rails! It's easy to eat terrible when we're stressed out. But bingeing on unhealthy food because it's convenient and comforting will come back to haunt you. Certain foods like dairy and carbs may trigger acne. Try to stick to your regular diet and stay hydrated. Also limit your intake of processed foods including refined sugar, which increase inflammation.

2. Don't Forget to Stay on Top of Your Skincare! At the end of a long, stressful day, it's only normal to want to crawl right into bed. But before you do, DON'T FORGET TO WASH YOUR FACE! The last thing you want to do is leave a layer of makeup, dirt, and oil on top of those already sensitive, clogged pores. Plus, if your skin isn't clean, how will you be able to properly exfoliate and apply your skincare regime (which also keep your skin healthy) before bed, too?

3. Don't Forget to Wash Your Hat! Okay, this one may sound like it's coming out of left-field, but it's important. Hats absorb hair product, makeup, and oil. Yuck. And since people rarely wash their hats, it can result in grimy buildup. Buildup + already irritated stressed skin = breakouts. Before you throw on that adorable Love Your Melon Beanie, make sure you regularly clean off the inner brim before it touches your forehead. (NOTE: Do this year-round for ALL OF YOUR HATS, even when you're not stressed out.)

Sometimes even the best preventative maintenance can't stop all facial blemishes from occurring.  If you're already suffering from acne and experiencing a stress flare up, you may need to schedule a peel to help remove the excess dead skin cells to restore balance back to your skin. And of course, check in with your doctor to see their prescribed course of treatment.
